Background:Enterococci have been regarded as pathogen of low grade virulence. But they have emerged as an increasingly important cause of nosocomial infections in the last decade. The most common nosocomial infections produced by these orgnisms are urinary tract infections, followed by intra-abdominal and pelvic infections, This study was conducted to clarify the clinical features and outcome of patients with enterococcal bacteremia,
Methods:Patients with enterococcal bacteremia treated at a Soonchunhyang university hospital in Seoul between January and June 2008 were reviewed.
Results:Twenty three patients (14 males and 9 females) were included for analyses. The mean age was 64 years (34-83), The risk factors of enterococcal bacteremia were diabetes rnellitus (47.8%), solid cancer (34.8%) and catheter insertion status (34.8%). The portal of entry included biliary tract (34.8%), urinary tract (17.3%) and respiratory tract (13.4%). Bacteremia was caused by 6 faecalis in 13 patients and by E. faecium in 8 patients. E faecium showed a higher rate of resistance to ampicillin than E faecalis, 11 patients received therapy and the most common monotherapy was vancomycin (21.7%). But 7 patients (30.4%) didn¡¯t received therapy, moreover 6 patients (26.1 %) continued with antibiotics resistant to
enterococcus (cephalosporins), A total 5 of 23 patients (mortality : 21.7%) had died and all of them died from underlying disease.
Conclusions:Knowledge of the characteristics of enterococcal bacteremia may be useful to improve the empirical treatment.
